Aggersborg: Introduction

Before the earth was piled into a perfect circle on the north bank of the Limfjord, there was a village here — ordinary, unremarkable, settled sometime in the late 700s, with pit houses and longhouses and the pottery and iron tools of people who fished and farmed and traded a little with Norway. In the tenth century it was destroyed and the ground scraped flat. Nobody wrote down what the villagers thought about it. What replaced their homes was Aggersborg: a rampart 240 metres across on the inside, twice the diameter of any other Viking ring fortress in Denmark, built in a year or two and abandoned within twenty.
