Pope Boniface IX heard the case — theirs was, the dispensation records, "a place near the sea with frequent floods and the resulting mud" — and allowed them to wear black, brown, or any other dark colour instead. In 1422 a second concession let them add undergarments for warmth and a cowl for their heads. It is a small, cold, human detail from a house that was otherwise one of the most formidable institutions in medieval Denmark.
