Photo credit Orf3us, CC BY-SA 4.0. Most Danish manor houses lost their water. The moats were filled, drained or softened into ornamental ponds as defence stopped mattering and gardens started to. Gammel Estrup kept its water, and that is the first thing you notice on the approach across the flat farmland of Djursland: a four-winged block of dark red brick sitting directly in a moat, with the walls dropping into it. When Lave Brock began building here around 1490 he was not making a country house. He was making a vandborg - a water castle - and the water came right up to the foundations. Five and a half centuries later the moat is the reason the building still reads as what it originally was, even though almost everything above it has been rebuilt at least once.
