Stand at the bottom of Pa Bjerget and look up, and the west front of Grundtvig's Church resolves into something you have seen before but never at this size: the ranked pipes of a church organ, stood on end and rendered in brick. The verticals rise and fall across the facade in stepped ridges, forty-nine metres to the top of the bell tower, and the eye is dragged upward whether or not it consents. It is one of the strangest buildings in Copenhagen and one of the very few 20th-century churches anywhere that people travel to see for its own sake. It sits not downtown but out in Bispebjerg, at the end of a long avenue of trees.
