Stand in Tinnet Krat, a patch of scrubby woodland in Vejle Municipality between Nørre Snede and Tørring-Uldum, and you are standing on a decision. Water leaving the foot of one small northeast-facing slope becomes the Gudenå and travels 149 kilometres north and east to the Kattegat. Water rising a few hundred metres away becomes the Skjern Å and goes west to the North Sea. A third stream, the Holtum Å, starts nearby as well. This is Jutland's main watershed - Store Vandskel - and the ancient road called the Hærvejen ran along it precisely because a ridge that sheds water in both directions is the driest way to travel a wet country. The Gudenå starts at about 72 metres above sea level. It has all of that country to get down.
