Gurre Castle: Introduction

A square stump of a keep, a ring wall with four corner towers, and beyond that only foundation lines under mown grass — the outline of a place, not the place itself. Coins struck here in the 1430s were stamped Castrum Gorge, the castle of Gurre, so the mint at least is beyond argument. Almost everything the name means to Denmark, however, happened somewhere else entirely: in ballads, in a poet's unfinished manuscript, and eventually in a Vienna concert hall that needed a chorus of several hundred to accommodate it.
