Photo credit CC BY-SA 2.0. In 1917 the Danish parliament passed a law to build a harbour at Hanstholm. The first fishing boats tied up in 1967. Fifty years is a long wait for a decision to turn into a quay, and the gap explains this place better than any statistic: a hard chalk headland on the most exposed corner of Jutland, too useful to give up on and too difficult to finish. Depression-era budgets stalled the work. The German occupation stopped it altogether and destroyed what stood on the beach. Rival Danish ports lobbied against it after the war. It got built anyway.
