Read it straight through and you get a compressed history of Danish landholding: knights, a royal councillor, then a stretch around 1800 when the farm changed hands six times in a decade and was once split three ways inside a single year. Then in 1829 a man called Jesper Lauritzen Elle bought it, and the churning stopped dead for one hundred and thirty-seven years. Hessel sits in Louns parish in Vesthimmerland, above the water where Hvalpsund narrows, and parts of it are still held up by oak felled in the year 1600.]]></description>
