It was minted around 1147, in a town already old enough to have a mint, a market and a regional assembly, and Heringa is simply the Latin that clerks used for a place Danes had long called Hjørring. Nobody can date the founding. Archaeologists find people in this landscape ten thousand years ago; the documents catch up only in 1243, when King Erik IV granted the town the same rights Viborg held. That charter is why Hjørring celebrated a 750th birthday in 1993, and why it can claim, without serious argument from anyone, to be the oldest market town in Vendsyssel.
