On 15 May 1879 a peat cutter working in Huldremose, a bog near Ramten in eastern Jutland, put his spade about a metre down and found a woman. She was fully dressed. That detail is the reason she matters, and it is also the reason the next few hours went the way they did: the local authorities looked at a clothed body in a bog and concluded they had a recent murder on their hands. She was carried to a nearby farm, undressed, washed, and examined by a police constable, the district physician and the pharmacist. Only when it became clear how old she was did the investigation stop — and the thing three men had just scrubbed clean turned out to be the most complete Iron Age outfit anyone in Denmark had ever seen.
