Photo credit Public domain. The first building in what is now Hundested was a house for pilots, put up around 1835 for men whose job was steering other people's ships through the narrows. The town that grew around it never really changed occupation. Hundested sits at the far tip of the Halsnæs peninsula, which pushes west from the northwestern corner of North Zealand and forms the western jaw of the entrance to the Isefjord. Water surrounds it on three sides: the Kattegat to the north, the channel into the Isefjord to the west, Roskilde Fjord and its approaches to the south. About 8,609 people live here, and for two centuries the town has made its living reading weather off that water.
