Kronborg: Introduction

That is the whole gap between Denmark and Sweden at Helsingør, and for four hundred years it was the most profitable stretch of water in northern Europe. Every merchant ship bound in or out of the Baltic had to squeeze through it, stop, declare the value of its cargo and hand over a cut to the Danish crown. Guns on both shores made the request difficult to decline. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries these Sound Dues brought in as much as two thirds of Denmark's entire state income. Kronborg is what that money built.
