The winning drawings came from the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, working with his wife Elissa and the Danish architect Jean-Jacques Baruël. Then nothing happened for the better part of a decade. Money was the problem, as it usually is, and by the time construction actually got going the world had moved on from the year the design was conceived. The building was raised between 1968 and 1972 and inaugurated on 8 June 1972 — a fourteen-year gap between the idea and the ribbon.]]></description>
