Photo credit Nico, CC BY-SA 4.0. For roughly two hundred years, the great project here was getting the water out. Counts drained lakes. Engineers cut ditches. During the Second World War, crews stripped peat for fuel, and after the war the digging continued for the sphagnum that fills garden centre bags across Europe, hauled out on the largest narrow-gauge industrial railway network Denmark ever built. The cutting stopped in 2008. Now the great project is putting the water back. Lille Vildmose - “little wild bog” - covers about 7,600 hectares of eastern Himmerland, some forty-five kilometres southeast of Aalborg, and it is the largest raised bog remaining in northwestern Europe. It is also, improbably, the place where moose walk in Denmark again.
