Mårup Church: Introduction

Photo credit Gunnar Bach Pedersen, Public domain. Denmark did not lose Mårup Church to the sea. It took the church apart first, stone by stone, and carried it away — which turns out to be a much harder decision than simply letting a building fall. For most of eight centuries a small brick church stood on Lønstrup Klint above the North Sea in Vendsyssel, and for roughly three of those centuries the cliff in front of it retreated by about a metre and a half every year. Anybody could do that arithmetic. The argument was never over whether the sea would win. It was over what to do while waiting.
