Meilgaard Castle: Introduction

Open an archaeology textbook in Lima or Osaka and you may find a Danish word sitting untranslated in the middle of an English sentence: kitchen midden, from køkkenmødding. The word was earned in a coastal wood on Djursland, on the grounds of a private estate, when three Danish scholars went out to settle an argument about oyster shells. The estate is Meilgaard, and that argument is one of the founding episodes of scientific archaeology — which makes this quiet manor between Fjellerup Strand and Bønnerup Strand a rather more consequential address than it looks.
