In 1536 the prior of Sæby's Carmelite house did something unusual for a man in his position. He handed the monastery buildings over to the town and explained that the brothers could no longer support themselves. The Reformation was reaching Denmark that year and religious houses everywhere were being seized; Sæby's simply surrendered first. Everything went except the church, and the church stayed because it had never really belonged to the monks — they had built their house by enlarging a parish church the townspeople already had. Five centuries later it still stands on Strandgade, fifty-four metres from end to end, easily the largest structure in a small town that has kept the shape of its old streets.
