Sagnlandet Lejre: Introduction

Photo credit Toxophilus, CC BY-SA 4.0. In 1967 the staff at Lejre built a house and then set fire to it. This was not vandalism or a stunt; it was the experiment. Archaeologists excavating Iron Age settlements were reading scorched postholes and collapsed daub, and nobody could say with confidence what a burnt house actually leaves in the ground. So Lejre burned one under controlled conditions and waited. Twenty-five years later they excavated the site and compared what they found with what they knew had been there. That is the whole logic of the place, and it was radical enough in the 1960s that Sagnlandet Lejre - the Land of Legends, four kilometres northwest of the town of Lejre on Zealand - is generally counted as the first centre in the world set up to test prehistoric technology by doing it.
