Conrad Malte-Brun was born here in 1775, fell out badly with the Danish authorities, spent the rest of his life in France, and as a geographer there coined the word Oceania. He never came home. That turns out to be a pattern. For a market town of 13,535 people on the north shore of the Limfjord, Thisted has produced a remarkable number of people who left and then changed something somewhere else — a novelist, a school reformer, a shipbuilder, and a surgeon whose death became a footnote in medical history.
