Sønderholm Church had bells, the bells rang, and the underground people who lived nearby lost patience — so they gathered up enormous stones and hurled them at the tower. Every one missed. What landed instead, in a field seven hundred metres northeast of the village, was Troldkirken: fifty metres of earthen barrow outlined by forty-seven boulders, with a stone chamber at its centre. The explanation is wrong by roughly four and a half thousand years, but it is the kind of wrong that tells you exactly how the monument felt to people who had no other way to account for it.
