Photo credit Public domain. In 1943 a farmer draining meadows outside Klejtrup pulled a stone out of the mud and saw Jutland in it. Søren Poulsen was in his mid-fifties. He could have thrown it on the pile with everything else the wet ground gave up that season. Instead he decided to build the rest of the world around it — in a shallow lake, out of boulders he would move himself, at a scale of 27 centimetres to a degree of latitude. He began in 1944. He stopped in 1969, because that was the year he died. The World Map at Lake Klejtrup covers more than 4,000 square metres of water, and every coastline on it was set in place by one man with no engineering training and no machine worth the name.
